Boston-based indie darlings Passion Pit will bring their helium-filled brand of electro-dance pop to Salt Lake City’s Urban Lounge tonight. Fresh off a summer full of big-time music festivals and an exhaustive touring schedule, Michael Angelakos and company will fill downtown SLC’s much more intimate venue with pulsing beats and soaring melodies off their critically acclaimed full-length debut, Manners.
If you haven’t seen Passion Pit before (and, since you live in Utah, you almost certainly haven’t), you owe it to yourself to be in Salt Lake tonight. It’s not often that one of the country’s hottest bands comes through these parts, so it’s best to take advantage of opportunities like this when they arise. If that’s not enough to convince you to make the 45-minute drive north, check out what Spin Magazine had to say about the band’s midnight set at the mother-of-all-festivals, Bonnaroo:
Getting the party started with skittering breakbeats and then keeping it going with a throbbing disco pulse and frothy washes of synths, Passion Pit gave the rain-soaked crowd in This Tent just the midnight pick-me-up it needed. With three banks of keys plus drums and bass, the Massachusetts quintet served up one bracing draught of heavenly electro-pop after another. The biggest high, though, came from frontman Michael Angelakos, whose stratospheric vocals on faves like “Little Secrets” and “Sleepyhead” had enough helium in them to keep the balloons the audience was batting back and forth aloft all night. The children’s chorus from New York’s P.S. 22 might not have been on hand to chant “higher, higher” on “Little Secrets,” but the festival-goers did just fine, throwing thousands of sweaty hands high in the air.
If that’s not enough to convince you to part with a mere $15 and endure a brief car ride for a memorable live music experience, you most likely lack a pulse. Come out to Urban Lounge tonight and have some serious fun with one of America’s funnest bands. We’ll be there — and we hope to see you on the dancefloor.
Passion Pit will play the Urban Lounge in Salt Lake City tonight at 9:00 p.m. Tickets are $15 and were still available at the time of this writing. You can listen to the band’s intoxicating “Little Secrets” below.
Steve Pierce is co-founder and editor of Rhombus, and regularly writes about music and popular culture. You better believe he’ll be singing along to Michael Angelakos’ every word at Urban Lounge tonight.
