I’ll try to be brief.
Gentlemen Broncos has been getting eviscerated by critics. There are a handful of very good reviews, which you can find here, here and here (I don’t care what anyone says, I like Armond White), but the overall response to this film has been almost ragingly negative.
I’m so much of a fan of Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre) that I’m still incredibly excited to go see this film. In fact, considering the livid response, I’m even more excited.
But, obviously, not everyone feels that way. Including the film’s distributor, Fox Searchlight, who is on the brink of deciding not to give it a real release. The critics have scared them.
Please go see this film, and tell your friends to go see it too. (It’s playing this weekend at the Broadway Centre Theatre in Salt Lake and at Megaplex 17 in Jordan Commons.) We can help prove that this movie can make enough money to be worth a wider release. Jared Hess is a swell filmmaker, and there isn’t anybody out there like him. And he’s a former BYU film student to boot (so…um, I might be biased).
This is what it comes down to: we are the people who will end up determining whether this film gets seen. We just need to show up. I’ll be going to the 9:15 showing this Saturday night at Jordan Commons. Hope to see you there.
Jordan Petersen is a film correspondent for Rhombus. He seems to be leading a one-man revolution on behalf of Jared Hess.
