I'm not sure exactly how to take this review. You could have just said that "indie" bands were a bunch of stupid, mindless, clumsy, and out of sync idiots, who only attract teenie boppers who mosh and dance and don't appreciate "good music". I enjoyed the "cowboy" bands. I thought their sound was crisp and good. I'd consider buying their albums, especially Code Hero. I do think that they tend to attract a certain kind of fan base ....and they don't mesh well with the fan base of the "indies" very well. It truly was a clash of crowds. But to say that all the fans of the "indies" were high school aged and that there was nothing but "prepubescent" moshing is ridiculous. For one, there wasn't moshing going on, with the exception of one part of an ER song. The rest was jumping up and down and having a good time. I know because I was right in the middle of the crowd having a great time. Did you expect them to just stand there and not move? Its obvious that you prefer this kind of concert experience. I enjoy sitting back and relaxing and letting the music sink in when its the right band. But a big part of a concert experience is getting in the crowd and jumping around and singing to the music. Does this make us not appreciate good music? Is moving around and having a good time THAT immature? Its fine to say that you don't enjoy music that way or its not your thing or whatever, but to say that its prepubescent?
Also, you're making it sound like because they had the bigger crowd that they are some kind of a sell out that just puts out mindless drivel that is simple and it appeals to the "masses". Masses? They are local bands not Nickelback. (I think Seve Vs Evan had the most by far and I think I saw on the list that Code Hero may have had the second most or were tied for second with ER, so I guess they would be considered masses.
I do agree that even if a band gets a whole crowd moving and dancing like the "indie" bands doesn't necessarily mean they out perform a band that is more mellow like the "cowboys". Which, by the way, I wouldn't say that the alt country music should be described to "blow your face off". I think that gives the wrong idea about those bands.....that would be a better description of the indies. The cowboys would be better described, in my opinion as polished, crisp, pretty and atmospheric.
I feel like I'm jumping all over you for this, which I'm trying not to, but I do feel like you went to that concert with a closed mind that the "cowboys" were the best ever and that the "indies" were just a bunch of mindless drones that just want a synth beat to dance to. I especially think you were harsh on the ER. They of course have their strengths and weaknesses and they didn't have the best show sound wise. The mic kept shorting out of the lead singer and I couldn't hear the guitar that well. You couldn't hear the lead singer very well and I don't know if he could hear himself sometimes. But to say that don't care about their sound and that its all about the show (which by the way, I don't recall the lead singer banging on the trash can that much), I don't really understand how you are interrupting that. I also didn't understand how you thought their climax was "cacophonous". I thought they ended on a great song at a great time. How was it unpleasant and how was Code Hero ending on a cover the greatest thing in the world?
Anyway, I'm rambling and I appreciate your review, although I don't really agree with most of it. I think reviewing concerts is a hard thing to do and it takes guts to put your opinion up in such a public forum. Just consider us "indies" next time. :)
