Daniel, you hit the nail on the head, my friend. With all of the attention he's been being paid in the tabloids, I had a sneaking suspicion that John was on a one way road to becoming an uber hedonist. I tried not to think about Jessica Simpson when listening to songs like "In Your Atmosphere," but with this new album it seems like he's not only indulging in, but leveraging his super star status. It's like the guy is caught in a tug of war, with one side crying out, "Be real, John. Make real music!" and the other side saying, "Sell, John, sell! And date Jennifer Aniston while you're at it." I thought he'd come to some sort of reconciliation with "Continuum." But I guess not.

While I can't blame the dude, I still can't help feeling disappointed. Even a little hurt. Oh, well. It was a good ride while it lasted.

If I remember correctly the first singles released from Continuum were "Waiting on the World to Change" and "Say", both the rock bottom low points of that stellar album. Listening to this single, I'm hoping and praying that John is merely adhering to prior form: Releasing something a little more mainstream, catchy, and sing-a-long-able by 17 year old girls in masses, while all the while lurking beneath is an edgy, bluesy, rockin masterpiece for the rest of us to enjoy. I skip waiting on the world to change everytime... I hate that song, but for some people that's what got them to buy the album and hopefully come to appreciate something a little better.

I heart John Mayer

This was pretty hilarious. I loved the line about the "harrowing battles with which he deals." I even laughed out loud. I am surely not one of the world's five biggest John Mayer fans, but after hearing the single I was also under the impression that it wasn't his strongest work. The I heard the song he did with Taylor Swift and those suspicions seemed confirmed. (Side note: Is she his next victim in a line of failed high profile relationships? I mean if the desire to be "culturally relevant" is really what drives him, she would be a -or perhaps THE- logical choice right now.) Undoubtedly the album will still sell well, but Mr. Mayer is going to have to roll out some more impressive material on the rest of the album to sway me. I look forward to reading your the review.
