This got me thinking about how we could get more people to come to local shows, more than just the bands' friends. How do we appeal to people that might really like it but just don't know it yet, or motivate the people that like it but don't actually go that often? Maybe promotion shouldn't be just left to individual bands/venues. I don't know, but can we seriously start brainstorming about this?

I'll start. What if we had some kind of a new student guide for really cool off-campus things? I didn't leave BYU campus for like a year but I totally would have if I had known where to go!

Kaneischa you are fabulous that is more what i was trying to say with my emotional comment above, because although i couldn't be there having a show of my own that is not folk music in park city, Friday nights anniversary line up is as good as it gets anywhere in the country! i was so mad i missed it.
Also i also disagree about mas venues, more people need to attend and know about the ones that already exist because they are doing sooooo much people don't even know about!
Next i have to say, Mr Manning Kaneischa can definitely help you she is so knowledgeable about what is happening, oh and Mr. Fox has been doing stuff for this scene long before Velour Live Music gallery in fact long before i even graduated from high school, and i am old for this town. The problem isn't that these things are new but we need to work together to find a way to inform the masses and that is why i love this online mag!
keep writing these and keep doing the best we can and there will be more!

yeah thom, i love folk music but i love rock music,i actually love all music, i agree part is promotion, but lets be frank, Folk is dominant here because there are a lot of really great folk artists here, and not nearly as many great rock n rollers! and some of the best rock n rollers do not promote themselves well enough. So to get more rock more people need to rock and with the exception of a few rock groups that i LOVE here in provo more rock groups need to not be bad!

Great list...but it sounds like you may be a little blind to what is actually going on in the local music scene. While yes, there are many great folk-ish bands producing music right now, there are definitely still a wide array of other genres being pursued. In fact, come to Velour tonight. Check out some rock bands, dance bands, electronic bands...and all are top notch. Let me know how I can keep you posted on the schedules of shows going on around town, because I would love for you to be able enjoy a more diverse lot of (talented) local music. Tell me what you like, and I can find something for you!

Also, in regards to "mas venues"...I disagree. Provo is full of as many venues as this small town can handle. Many have tried to open new venues, and few have succeeded, for a reason. It takes a lot to maintain a successful business around here, particularly in a niche, student market. The best thing you can do to help the existing ones continue to succeed (and stay open!) is support them by attending and promoting their shows.

Thanks for your post...it's nice to see folks taking an interest in what's going on!

Good article Scott. Keep it up.

To add to the resolutions:
 1. Leagues. Sledding leagues, roller skate teams, bicycle gangs, etc.

Get article. I agree wholeheartedly. Provo could be an amazing place for music if we could change some thing. I enjoy a good folk song, but I'm getting sick of all the folk bands in Provo. It's to bad most of Provo music goers don't agree. There is plenty of bands in Utah County playing different genres, but nobody notices. This could be because people love listening to the same stuff (folk) or bands not promoting enough, probably both. I am guilty of the latter. My band could do more promoting. I plan on doing so.
